Today was a better day. I was up alot more and only had half doses of my pain medicine. I'm glad to be home in my own bed. I watched movies and hung out a little with my step sisters.
Thank you Margie for the card!

Coming home
Day 4 and we're coming home!!! She's made it without her IV pain medicine for more than a 1/2 day now.
I can tell she's getting perkier and smiling more. Her neck is still sore, but her incision is looking good. We both got a really good night sleep, a much needed good night sleep.
She still welcomes phone calls and emails.
The doctor wants to see her in two weeks for a check up. Dr. Bob is arranging for a consult with an arthritis doctor to see if we can determine what causes her underlying back pain.
Other than that, all is well and we are thrilled with yesterday's news.

Still resting....
Mariah had lots of visitors today. She got to see more nurses and friends who haven't seen her in a white. She still struggled with pain. Later though, they increased the pain meds to help her rest more comfortably.
She did get lots of presents delivered today. Flowers from the Walker Family, Balloons and a stuffed puppy from her Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles on her Dad's side. Her dad bought her a huge teddy bear, and a nurse we dont know, came in and gave her a pair of handmade beaded snowman earrings. Childlife gave her a bag full of purfumes, bath stuff and nail polish.....Im beginning to think there's something good about surgery!! Okay maybe not...but the cards, thoughts, presents and flowers are all great!
She is able to receive phone calls - email me and i'll give you the number.

A rough night...but resting comfy now
It was a rough nite for both of us. She did real well and slept comfortably when she first got her pain medicine. After an hour or so, when it began to wear off, she wrestled around and cried.
I just wanted to crawl in bed with her, cuddle her and make it all go away.
We managed to get a few hours of sleep here and there. Right now she's resting comfy. She's had no complications.
She wants chicken noodle soup! That's a good sign!
I'm so glad we are here in this hospital. This is her second "home'. It's been nearly 10 years since she's been admitted. She's had so many visitors from Doctors and Nurses who used to take care of her. She loves that.
She's also gotten lots of cards and phone calls from international friends. Friends are great!

The worst is over
She did well thru surgery. The doctor did say that the right side of her thyroid was unusually small but the left was unusually large. It was between the size of a quarter and a half dollar. The surgery was around 3 1/2 hours.
When we saw her she was in a lot of pain. She had some great nurses though - at least they made us laugh! She is still experiencing pain at times, but is able to rest comfortable too. She just finished some chicken broth- one of her favorite hospital foods that she used to call 'nee-no oop" We still tease her.
We will find out in a couple of days what the pathology is and then go from there.
She would appreciate any comments or encouragement you want to post.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

Surgery over and onto recovery
The latest
About 2pm the latest word was that they were still in the operating room, but she is doing well.
Childlife came to talk to her. It was great seeing old friends. The Childlife specialist here is the same one that took care of her when she was just a baby. She's setting her room up with a big TV and full of chick flicks...she'll love that.

Off in Surgery...Finally
Well it's 11:53am and they have finally taken her to surgery. While in the pre-op holding we laughed and joked...she got a body massage (she had to love that!) We told Jeff Foxworthy jokes and then there were times of seriousness where her eyes welled up in tears when she thought about it. But all in all, she did great.
When she received her dose of versid, she got real starry eyed and said 'Wheeeennnn aareeee grannnndma and grandpa coming' in cute slow motion. She didnt remember they are already here.
more updates as I get them...
Thanks for your thoughts, and concern. She'll appreciate your comments when she wakes up later.

My first post - the night before my surgery
The time has finally come and my mom and I are sitting in the "Haven House" the night before my surgery. I am getting my thyroid taken out tomorrow. Doctors found a tumor on it. It's not the first surgery I've had, but I sure hope it's the last.
It was kind of scarey coming here since we had a major ice storm last night. We drove to St.Louis this morning despite the freezing rain.
I just opened a package from a friend of mine in England. Her name is Gill. She sent me a beautiful card with butterflies on it and a pretty pair of earrings. I love them.
Next, I opened a card from a lady on one of my mom's message boards called Lucy McGoo. She made me a card with a hummingbird design on the front. On the back it said:
"A Merry-Mary Card
USA: Priceless
Canada: Priceless +15%'
That made me laugh! THANKS MARY!
Im kind of nervous and scared and just anxious to get this over with.
This blog is mostly for my friends so that they get updates on how Im doing. Please leave me comments. I would love to hear from you.
